Martial arts uniforms – type, sizing and care

Choose a uniform designed for your martial art. Its fabric, weave and fit should suit the movements and demands of your training.

Which uniform should I choose?

A karate gi for kumite is often light and flexible, while kata models usually use heavier fabric. A judogi must withstand gripping and throwing. BJJ gis have reinforced jackets and trousers and their own sizing systems. Jujutsu and aikido may require durable uniforms for grips and falls; follow your club's advice.

A taekwondo uniform is called a dobok. WT kyorugi models often have a V-neck, but ITF, poomsae and other formats may use different cuts. Check the required style and colour with your club.

Size and fit

Many traditional uniforms use body height as a starting point. BJJ often uses adult A-sizes, with other systems for women's and children's models. Sizes are not standardised across brands. Use the product's chart and consider height, weight and build.

You should be able to bend, raise your arms and perform techniques without restriction. Avoid buying a child's uniform with so much growing room that sleeves or trousers interfere with training.

Fabric and shrinkage

GSM means grams per square metre of fabric, not a quality rating. Pearl Weave is common in BJJ jackets; ripstop is used in some trousers. Even preshrunk cotton can shrink further. Do not try to correct the size with hot washing or tumble-drying.

How should I wash it?

Follow the garment's care label. A blanket recommendation to wash at 60°C is unsuitable for many uniforms. Wash regularly, avoid chlorine bleach and dry thoroughly. Tumble-dry only if the manufacturer permits it.

Does it need competition approval?

That depends on the organiser. Check current rules for dimensions, material, colour and labels. Also check whether a belt is included when buying a set.
