Skipping ropes – length, material and design

Skipping ropes can support conditioning, coordination and rhythm. Choose a rope for your technique, training surface and intended jumps.

Which type suits me?

A PVC rope or one with noticeable weight is often easier for beginners to feel and control. A thin cable speed rope with smooth rotation suits fast jumps and double unders, where the rope passes twice beneath the feet in one jump. It requires greater precision.

For boxing and varied footwork, control and rhythm matter more than maximum rotation speed. Check that the handles feel comfortable and that the length is adjustable.

How long should the rope be?

Follow the model's adjustment guide. Standing on the centre and pulling the handles up alongside your body can provide a starting point, but the correct length depends on technique and the manufacturer's measurement method. Start with some allowance, test and shorten gradually. Do not cut a cable before confirming the setting.

Surface and care

Use a level surface with clear space overhead and around you. Rough tarmac is particularly abrasive to thin cables. A suitable skipping mat can protect the rope. Inspect the cable, coating, fittings and handles; replace damaged parts.

How do I start training?

Begin with short intervals and relaxed single jumps. Keep jumps low and drive rotation mainly from the wrists. Progress gradually and stop if painful. A more expensive rope cannot replace correct length and technique.
